MINDSET to FLIP THE SCRIPT: How to Use Negative Emotions to Your Advantage

Promote yourself from Homeowner to Architect

Unpopular Opinion:

Be miserable.

Be disgruntled.

Hate your life.

REALLY truly let that discomfort and dis-ease sink in.

Then use that discontent to your advantage.

💥 Use it to fortify your resolve to CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

💥 To never give up on finding your Purpose.

💥 To search — relentlessly — until you find what you LOVE.

💥 To align your work with YOUR passion.

💥 To spend time the way YOU want to spend it.

💥 To focus on doing what YOU want to do.

💥 To live the life YOU want to live.

💥 To be who YOU want to be.

Oh, how I love this practice!

At first, it seems confronting. Offensive, almost.

Because I’m encouraging you (and me) to welcome our negative emotions.

But I’m not a sadist (or a masochist).

I’m a friend who cares. And so is your negativity.

Our emotions — especially the negative ones — are messengers. And they bear us no ill will.

They’re like neighbors who come to visit us.

When we like them, when we enjoy their company, we open the door and let them right in. Joy? Happiness? Excitement? “Come on in!” we exclaim, as we swing that door wide open.

But when they’re sad. When they’re angry. When they’re depressed or disappointed. They press that doorbell, their emotion rings and reverberates in our bodies, hearts, and minds, and we keep that door shut. We flip those deadbolts to make sure they can’t get inside. We pull down the shades, close the curtains, and start whispering, “Go away!” hoping that they’ll just give up and leave us the hell alone.

But, they’re friends — not foes.

They’re here to warn us.

They ring that doorbell again and again — not to harass us — but to let us know that something is wrong in our life.

It could be someone or something. But something is definitely amiss.

At the slightest hint of danger, they’re there, letting us know.

They tell us it’s too dry and hot outside; the leaves and brush are beginning to pile and they pose a risk.

When it hasn’t rained for months, there’s more than risk.

Suddenly, the fire’s here, and it’s beginning to spread across your lawn.

The piles of brush you hadn’t swept away are smoking, about to burst into bright red orange flames.

Why not listen to their negativity?

Listening to them won’t kill us.

Listening to them will save us.

Besides, what choice do we have?

When we try to avoid uncomfortable or painful emotions, we’re trapped, thinking we’re safe inside, but that’s just denial. Or fear that’s masked in avoidant behavior. Maybe not consciously, but subconsciously at the very least.

And ignoring negative emotions doesn’t work.

Like good neighbors, they won’t stop ringing our door.

Fervently, they keep pressing our doorbell, with more and more pressure.

Do you hear them? They’re sounding the alarm, trying to save you!

They refuse to give up. You need saving!

So their finger’s no longer pointing. They’re pounding their fists, like a jackhammer.

Their force makes cracks form, along the edge of our foundation.

They can’t help it, when we let the fire climb up our walls. Until it’s so bad, the front door falls, and our entire house comes falling down.

I don’t know about you, but I do not want to fall apart.

So let’s welcome our negative neighbors in. Let’s invite them inside.

There’s no need to be afraid when we are the architect.

And they’ve got the information we need to build a sanctuary — a sanctuary where all our emotions can be housed.

Do we want a house made of straw?

No. We need one that’s strong, with pillars built to withstand any threat.

We need emotional resilience.

So, we invite all our emotional neighbors in. They tell us:

• Sadness can build the pillar to honor ourselves.

• Regret can build the pillar to make better plans.

• Anger can build the pillars for healthy boundaries & self-respect.

• Loneliness can build the pillars for community & connection.

• Depression can build the pillar for happier days ahead.

• Feeling lost can build the pillar for us to be our most Authentic Self.

I’m ready to listen to their opinions. Aren’t you?

Just think, what hope do we have if we’re constantly trying to keep our emotions as far away from us as possible?

If we’re too afraid to open the door, until a gentle ring of the doorbell transforms into a battering ram?

Does it make sense to be weak, too afraid to examine the cracks until they’ve completely broken us apart and torn us down?

Better to look at them now, while they’re small.

Better to investigate why they’ve formed in the first place.

Better to realize that the pain we’re experiencing now is protecting us and preventing us from having unnecessary pain in the future.

So let’s answer the door. Let them inside!

Even if it’s misery. Or longing. Really feel that dis-ease!

Ask them why they’re there. What are they trying to tell us?

If our life’s not working for us,

if our jobs aren’t making our lives better,

if people aren’t elevating our lives, but sucking the life out of us,

then let’s listen!

Even if a lot of time has passed — even if we’ve tried to turn off the lights and board up the house, but it hasn’t worked, and that ding-dong of a doorbell’s become a siren wailing, desperately for us to listen — it’s not too late!

Hate that blaring alarm so much that it spurs us to take action & put the fire out!

Allow the anger, pain, stress, and overwhelm inside, and they’ll build the pillars we need to strengthen our resolve.

Yes, sometimes your negative neighbors are precisely the friends that you need.

To change your life.

To remove everything that doesn’t serve you.

Until all that’s left is a sanctuary, with pillars and walls that support you.

Making friends with all your emotions will strengthen your capacity to not only feel — but to feel, deeply — so you can stop denying who’s at the door.

Because that emotional friend is who you are.

And they’re here to tell you, you can choose who you want to be.

So you can live the fulfilling life that you deserve.

Now, take a Mindful Minute to reflect on your life:

In what ways do you deny your feelings?

Do you tend to avoid negative emotions?

What are you afraid to feel?

Are you guilty of toxic positivity?

In what ways can negative emotions serve a purpose?

Are you ready for a promotion, from Homeowner to Architect?

I am.

I’m telling myself, again and again,

“You can build a sanctuary to protect the most tender parts of you.”

“You can have a home filled with happiness, joy, and peace.”

“With pillars so strong, you can weather any storm.”

“It’s always possible, when you make room for every part of you.”

MINDSET to Redefine Excellence in a way that Regulates Your Nervous System

Take control of your Life. Be the Captain of your own ship.

The Danger of Perfectionism

The danger of perfectionism — especially in today’s achievement-obsessed world — is that we define “Excellence” as the achievement of goals, and not-achieving those goals means you’re a capital F “Failure.”

WRONG!

True Excellence requires

  • Balance.
  • Flexibility.
  • Fun.
  • Flow.

A life of Excellence allows us to play while we pursue our goals, to explore & evolve with an open mind, to pivot & change course, like we’re steering our rudder through a fluid, flowing sea, with ever-shifting tides.

It’s a life as expansive as the ocean, where we’re allowed the freedom to study the currents of our lives, like sailors charting the paths that WE choose. And our continual survival automatically enhances our skills, our resilience, and our ability to LOVE our lives.

Excellence isn’t just getting from Point A to Point B.

Excellence is learning to love the journey that takes you there.

Excellence is exploration. Even if you take a detour. Even if you find one shore better than another. Even if you scrap one itinerary to plan another path instead.

It’s discovering…

  • How many sunsets did you enjoy?
  • You didn’t like that one spot, but now you’re excited to explore another hemisphere.
  • Who did you meet along the way?
  • Whose cultures resonated with you?
  • Which lifestyles spoke to your soul?
  • How did the journey change you?

No matter what happens, Excellence exists, not when we get to point B, but sooner: The precise moment when we decide to be the Captain of our own ship.

Now, take a Mindful Minute to reflect on your life:

Are you letting the turbulence around you — other people’s opinions and/or external factors — to take you off-course?

Or, are you the Captain of your own Life?

MINDSET to Be At Peace

Making peace is a choice.

CHOOSE peace. Yes, it can be that simple.

After living much of my life stuck in a state of fight, flight, freeze, fawn, I’ve finally found freedom in peace.

I take the time to rest.

I allow myself time to pause.

I give myself the gift of early mornings, to set my intention for the day and do something — anything — to fill my cup first, before the demands of the day take hold.

In doing so, I can give my full attention…

To time spent with family and friends.

To my writing, art, and music.

To experiencing every emotion, as it courses through my body.

To welcoming every part — even the inner critic, like a lost and lonely friend.

With care, I can give myself a few moments — right now — to watch the in and out of a few miraculous breaths.

The less willing I am to rush, the more time I seem to have.

The calmer and steadier I feel.

The more resilient and confident I am.

Yes, I remember, I do have a choice!

The more I practice giving myself peace, the more I find it in my life and in my body. What a blissful state to be in! To stop striving and straining so stressfully, and yet still achieve.

It’s not a constant — not yet — but I hope that the more I seek peace, the more easily peace becomes me.

Now, take a Mindful Minute to reflect on your life:

MINDSET to SAVOR Our Time with Family & Friends

None of us can escape Death, so let’s cherish every moment & every experience we can have together!

A Mamma deer and her sweet little Fawn that visited my childhood home many times during our visit. Watching them together with my family was such a peaceful blessing.

I just came back from visiting my parents.

Both have cancer (different types). Thankfully, they’re both in remission, but their advancing age makes me fear. I am not ready for them to go. But I never will be.

At most, I can remind myself to savor their presence. To be fully present with them now.

As we flew to my hometown in the Midwest where I was born and raised, I experienced a mix of emotions. I could feel that fear, gnawing away at my peace of mind, every time I wondered, “Will this be the last time I get to spend time with them?”

You would think I’d stop asking myself this question by now. Especially when it’s been years since they went into remission. But, they’ve also had recurrences, when the cancer’s returned. Going through that multiple times has added to the trauma that my family’s experienced, physically and emotionally. It’s created this intermittent, yet terrible, mental and emotional state. It’s the turmoil of not-knowing.

It helped to remind myself that none of us ever escape death.

All of our days are numbered — no matter who we are. And death is a natural part of the cycle of life. Railing against it, straining to avoid it, wanting to remove the experience of not-losing them one day is impossible.

So, instead, I meditated.

And — like always — my breaths steadied me.

My inner sight allowed me to envision what a wonderful time we would have during our visit. And I anchored myself to that. I looked forward to the joy of making memories with them, felt the physical sensation of joy and peace, and was excited to see them having fun with my two young kids.

We did EVERYTHING!

Went to our favorite museums…the zoo, the botanical garden, our favorite Chinese food for the most scrumptious dim sum, went out to eat at all our favorite restaurants, enjoyed the most nostalgic food, and slept in the house I grew up in, in the same room I used to write in as a child and high schooler, until I left the nest and spread my wings.

What a blessing to fly home, to be with my family and revisit the places and experiences I remember so fondly.

And, now, as I wade through the pictures of our visit, I get to savor all of it — the presence and connection to my family — not just for today, but always.

Now, take a Mindful Minute to reflect on your life:

Whose presence are you savoring today?

The Presence in me honors, respects, & savors the Presence in each of you,

MINDSET: Work WITH your Nervous System, NOT against it!

YOUR BODY will EMPOWER your MIND!

Work WITH your Nervous System, NOT against it!

Want to make it easier to put yourself out there and reach your goals?

Despite the fear?

Despite the uncertainty?

Despite the self-doubt and that inner critic that just won’t shut up?

Get MOVING!

Exercise.

Or dance to your favorite tunes.

Do something that uplifts you and gives you some positive endorphins coursing through your veins.

Then, when you feel awesome inside and out, when you feel confident, and you’ve got all those fantastic, happy hormones coursing through your veins…

That’s when you DO IT!

That thing you’re afraid to do!

  • That person you’ve been dying to ask out.
  • That RSVP you’ve been nervous about responding to.
  • That big presentation that you’ve been secretly wanting to lead, put your name forward.
  • That performance that the shy you has been dying to bust out.

Do it!

Take action!

Then bask in the afterglow of a job well done, of one rep fully achieved.

No matter how imperfect it might be.

This is how we slowly expand our comfort zone

Until we build the confidence to realize that we can learn absolutely anything when we work with our bodies, brains, physiology, and biochemistry — not against it !

Whenever you’re stuck in self-doubt, do NOT sit still.

Get out of your head.

GET MOVING!

Then do it!

Celebrate, and rinse, lather, repeat!

Now, take a Mindful Minute to reflect on your life:

What’s 1 thing you’re afraid to do?

Get MOVING, then DO IT!

Without overanalyzing.

Without censoring yourself.

It doesn’t need to be perfect. Progress over perfection.

Remember, you deserve to be the Authentic YOU.

We’re much more capable than we think.

That time you walked the neighborhood knocking on doors, selling Girl Scout cookies?

That’s why you can reach out to five potential collaborators today.

That time you learned how to keep track of your college assignments?

That’s why your family’s calendar of sports activities and fun events is a color-coded, person-specific masterpiece.

That time you learned how to balance a checkbook?

That’s why you’re not only earning, but saving for your retirement, so your family’s not left without a safety net.

That time you stood up to that grade school bully?

That’s why you don’t let that dishonest sycophantic lazy-ass “colleague” take credit for your work.

Whenever you’re stuck in self-doubt, REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE!

See yourself clearly!

Cause you and I both know, YOU GOT THIS!

MINDSET to Improve Your Environment (Home & Heart)

It takes a lot less time than we tell ourselves to make a massive difference in our environment.

Take yesterday, for example.

I was just about to head over to a friend’s house when I realized that my daughter had some beautiful dresses that she had grown out of.

So, before the drive, I sent my friend a quick text & photo to see if she might be interested in having them. With a “Yes please!” she said the dresses were gorgeous and told me how much her daughter loves to wear dresses, “she would wear a dress every day if she could!”

So I brought them along with me. And when I gave them to her, we talked about how fun it is to have daughters, and how funny it is when they go through different phases. Because my own young daughter has gone from LOVING dresses to not being interested in wearing them AT ALL (or anything with unicorns on it). Seriously, you should see how she scrunches her face at the sight of them!

Oh how times have changed!

But how we can connect and share with others hasn’t.

So the next time you think “I don’t have time to tidy up or to connect with a friend,” just see what five minutes can do.

Mine led to a fun and funny conversation, authentic connection with a dear friend, some dresses found a new loving home, and I made more room in my daughter’s closet for all things non-dress and non-unicorn.

❌⁉️👗🦄⁉️❌Yes, No, Maybe so?

✅♥️👭♥️✅YES to connection with all that surrounds us!
